The holy city of Varanasi is identified as a door to salvation, which encourages pilgrimage from all across the country. Having been inhabitted for more than 5000 years, this makes it one of the oldest living cities in the world. Bodies are burnt and sinked into the waters 24/7, something that doesn't stop Hindu believers from plunging into them, seeking redemption for their sins.

Assisting sunrise along the Ganges river becomes a spiritual experience, where the mortal meets the immortal, a spectacle that can turn to be more graphical than desired. Corpse cremations are constant, public, and strictly forbidden to photograph.

The point of this sacred ceremony is to purify the deceased soul so it can transition into a state of nirvana, and photographs are said to interrupt this process.

VARANASI, Uttar Pradesh.
